Depending on the type of succulent, they can survive without water from a week to a month. Succulents are unique plants with fleshy, water-storing leaves or stems, making them drought-resistant and perfect for low-maintenance gardening.

However, their hardiness doesn’t mean they can thrive just anywhere. One crucial factor for healthy succulents is selecting suitable soil. A well-draining, nutrient-rich soil blend supports growth and helps prevent root rot, ensuring your succulents stay vibrant and resilient.

Understanding Succulent Soil Requirements

Understanding the soil requirements of succulents is key to helping them flourish.

Essential nutrients: Your soil mix should provide essential nutrients to support plant growth, though using liquid fertilizer is an alternative.

Airflow: Having good airflow is crucial to prevent root suffocation and fungal growth.

Well-draining soil: Ensuring well-draining soil is a must for avoiding waterlogged roots, which can lead to root rot.

Soil blend matches watering schedule: Tailor your soil blend to match your watering schedule or your plants’ specific water needs.

Resist adding sand: Resist the temptation to add sand to your succulent soil. Contrary to popular belief, sand can actually suffocate roots by clinging to them, rather than improving drainage.

Soil Mixture Recipes

Creating the perfect soil mixture for your succulents is essential for their health and growth.

For most succulents, Succs on Tap recommends the following:

  • 10 parts palm, cactus, or citrus soil (or a premixed cactus/palm soil)
  • 4 parts coco coir
  • 3 parts cherry stone (chicken grit, washed if treated with probiotics)
  • 2 parts worm castings
  • 1.5 parts pine bark fines

For round leaf types like cotyledon and moonstones, use a blend of 70-80% chicken grit and 20-30% of the aforementioned recipe.

Remember that these mixes may need adjustments based on your unique environments, such as climate, indoor/outdoor conditions, and watering habits. Don’t hesitate to experiment and fine-tune your soil mixtures to provide the ideal growing conditions for your succulents.

Watering Requirements For Rooted Succulents

Watering rooted succulents properly is essential for their health and longevity. A common misconception is that under-watering is always better than over-watering. However, understanding the specific needs of individual succulent types is crucial for optimal care.

Water requirements often depend on leaf type.

Broad, thin-leaved succulents like Sempervivum require more frequent watering due to minimal water storage, possibly weekly, depending on their soil mix.

Broad, chunky-leaved succulents such as Echeveria can go at least two weeks between watering, as they hold a substantial amount of water.

Round, chunky-leaved succulents like Cotyledon and Moonstones have leaves filled with water reserves and prefer longer intervals between watering to avoid stretching.

Considering each succulent’s unique needs and adjusting watering schedules accordingly will help your plants thrive and prevent issues like root rot and overwatering.
